Narrative Tenses Lesson Plan: Upper Intermediate
1. Show picture: “airplane” elicit vocabulary to do with planes
2. Show picture ( New Headway Upper Intermediate pg 27 (cartoon)) Sts focus on picture and answer the questions in groups. Who are the people in the picture? Where are they? What has happened?
3. Look at the cartoon and read the situation. (cards)
A man was travelling on a plane.
He stood up, and fell over.
What tenses are used?
Why are they used?
Ans: Past continuous and simple- the continuous action was interrupted by two consecutive short actions.
4. Students read the questions aloud and predict the answers.
5. Name the tenses in these questions
6. Listen to tape 3.1 (n. Headway unit 3) and answer these questions: What is Mandy’s job? Why did the flight attendants think the man had fallen over? Why in fact had he fallen over?
7. (Unit 3 New Headway pg 27 Narrative Tenses part 2) Put the events of the story together- Handout : “Mandy’s Story”
8. What tenses are used in the story? Ans: Past simple, continuous and past perfect simple- they are they main tenses used in storytelling.
9. Practice Bank ( Discussing Grammar) Handout “Choose the correct verb form.”
10. Have you ever heard of Harrods? What do you know about it? Do you like what Gilly is wearing?
11. Prediction task: Gilly went shopping in Harrods on Friday but she wasn’t allowed to enter the store on Saturday- why do you think this is?
12. Gilly’s story (handout: new headway upper intermediate pg 29 ) students must got through the text and fill in the blanks using the past tense you think is correct. Get feedback from students and go through mistakes.
13. “Listening to the news” T 3.2 Students will hear the radio news. They must listen to the first story. Tick the phrases they hear. Students must put a cross  next to the phrases they don’t hear. Correct them. Handout “The news”
14. Give practice exercise (n. Headway upper intermediate workbook pg 19) Practice or Irregular verbs- past simple or past perfect.
