The Difference between SAY and TELL

Although both of these words are used in both direct and indirect speech, say is more usual than tell in direct speech. This is because say can refer to any sort of speech, while tell always means "instruct" or "inform".

• "Put the money in the slot", he said.
• "Put the money in the slot", he told me.
• "You have to leave now", she said.
• "You have to leave now", she told me.
• We said, "Happy birthday!" (NOT We told him, "Happy birthday").

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MALTA

Ancient Malta

During the last Ice Age Malta was a high mountain joined to Italy by land. However when the Ice Age ended about 10,000 years ago the sea level rose and Malta became a group of islands. However about 5,200 BC stone age farmers arrived in Malta from Sicily and they began to farm the soil.

The earliest farmers made simple tools of stone and wood. They also made pottery. Despite their primitive tools the Stone Age farmers created an advanced society. From about 3,600 BC to about 2,500 BC they built great temples including those at Tarxien. They also carved the Hypogeum, a series of underground chambers, out of rock.

The temple building culture ended about 2,500 BC. We do not know why. On the other hand the Maltese began to use bronze tools and weapons. It is not clear if a new race migrated to Malta at that time or if the Stone Age farmers learned to use bronze from other people around the Mediterranean.

Phoenicians - About 800 BC the Phoenicians sailed to Malta. The Phoenicians were a highly civilised people from what is now Lebanon. They were great sailors and traders and they gave Malta its name. They called it Malet, which means shelter or haven.

Agony Aunt Letters

Dear Agony Aunt:

 8 months ago I very regrettably had a fling and my husband and I are now trying to heal and get over the pain I have caused.  My Husband has been very understanding and has stuck by me, but now the anger has come out.

 My husband rang this other man and starting being abusive.  He retorted by saying he has photos of me that would humiliate him and me.  The only photos I can think of were done on a mobile phone and they weren't hard core so to speak, but just stupid pictures.

 At the time of discovery I did not tell my husband, as I was full of enough shame and did not think these were relevant, but now my husband is questioning me all over again.  This other man is threatening to send them in the post (he does not have our address) but I am frightened. 

 My husband will give our address to him.  I have said I do not know what photos he could have (still), so I am now worried.

 Should I tell my husband what I think they are in case he gets to see them and cause more hurt?   Or ride the storm and not feel emotionally blackmailed by this?  I am completely worn down with it all now and want my life back with my husband.

What do people say about MARRIAGE?

An opinion on marriage. Well, lets see, I was married for 13 years and then was told that she didn't need me anymore. She told me that she had a good job with good benefits and she had no use for me anymore. So, I gave her what she wanted, her freedom. But really, marriage is a good thing. I wouldn't have traded it for the world. Sometimes it gets a little hectic, trying to bring two minds and opinions into one world, but that is easy to overcome. Marriage is a job, it's something you both have to work at to keep it going. You can't have one person doing everything while the other person is doing absolutely nothing, otherwise it'll never work. There is a lot of give and take, but I think it's worth it. Even though mine didn't work out the way I wanted it to, I planned on being married for life, I do believe that it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Whether or not I would do it again, well, that'll have to come in time.
