SOME FACTS ABOUT THE USE OF ENGLISH IN MALTA

  • Malta is a bilingual country. This means that it has 2 official languages – English and Maltese. English is spoken by over 90% of the Maltese population.

  • Maltese and English became the official languages of Malta in 1936,. Before that year, the official language of Malta was Italian.

  • At present, all official documents should be printed in Maltese and in English.

  • Although Maltese is used in most sectors of public life, including parliament, most Maltese people communicate using both languages. Italian is very often spoken as a third language by most Maltese people.

  • Malta was a British colony for over 150 years (until 1964) and this explains why the English language is so important to the Maltese people.
